Brief History
From 1950 to 1988, the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Department under the tutelage of the Dean of Instruction has aimed “to help the students acquire knowledge of the Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and develop the scientific attitude as well as the ability to conduct experiments. This prepares them to handle competently the teaching of the Natural Sciences.
Covering this period, the Department has offered degree programs such as BSE in Biology and BSE in General Science in 1970. (res. #101-C)BSE in Mathematics in 1973 (Res. # 1158); BS in Physics for Teachers and BS in Mathematics for Teachers in 1974 (Res. # 1259); BS in Biology, Chemistry and in Mathematics in 1975(Res. # 1419); and Certificate of Teaching for Science Specialization in 1985 (Res. #1818)
As per RA#1, Prof. Josefina A. Vicente was designated as head of the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Department in her absence, Prof. Daniel Oreta was appointed as acting Chairman of the Department, and upon the retirement of Dr. Oreta, Dr. Cesario P. Golla assumed his position. Under resolution #1815, Dr. Aurora M. Villamil was appointed as Head of the Department.
In 1989, the Philippine Normal College was restructured, creating the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences per Resolution # 2013. Headed by Prof. Zonia M. Gerona, followed by
Dr. Potrenciana Cruz ,The thrust of the School was “ . . . renewed vigor, commitment and concerted efforts directed toward raising the quality of science and Mathematics teachers who will carry on the Philippine Normal College tradition of excellence in teacher education”.
In 1993, the Board of Regents approved the new organizational structure of the Philippine Normal University from six schools to three Colleges. The Natural Sciences Department was split with the Mathematics Department under the College of Arts and Sciences (Res. # 3358116196).
Headed by Dr. Luordes M. Ferrer, followed by Dr. Lolita M. Salmorin, the Department’s objective was “to stimulate and enhance the interest among students, to pursue degree in the Natural Sciences for the development of highly scientific, self-reliant and committed science teachers”. In addition to the existing degree programs, the Department has included BE Physics and Technology Education in its curricular offerings (Rs. # 276, 12/4/95).
With the Mission “to produce new breed of teachers, scientists, and researchers equipped with necessary competencies for coping with the increasingly technological world”, the Department of Biological Sciences headed by Prof. Genelita S. Garcia, was founded in 1999, upon the approval of the new organizational structure of the PNU with the splitting of the College of Arts and Sciences (CASS) into College of Arts and Social Sciences and the College of Science under BOR Res. # U-17.
